Project 1: Digging through the NYC Subway Data

1. Competing transit agencies

The subway as we know it today is a merged entity operated by the MTA. Before the MTA takeover in 1940, the subway was a set of multiple independent lines. You can see the split up of subway booths by transit agency below. Read more here.

2. The busy stations

Times Square is by far the busiest station. The next two are-Grand Central 42nd Street, and 34th Street Herald Square.

3. What about the station near Columbia University?

Let's look at the ridership for the past 5 years for the 116th street station. Looks like ridership dipped in 2015.

4. Columbia University Station Entries

Looking closely at the 116th street station for the week of 24th September 2016, let's look at when the station is used the most. The usage dips heavily during the weekend!
